Ian Thayer Shares Why He's staying in Wv

After earning a bachelor’s degree in business management with an emphasis in human resource management from West Virginia University in 2023, Pennsylvania native, Ian Thayer, knew exactly where he wanted to begin his post-grad journey: in West Virginia!

Post-graduation, Ian went straight into the WVU Master of Human Resource Management program, and subsequently landed a job as an Associate Compensation Analyst for WVU Medicine; this position allows the nature enthusiast to work remotely and get outdoors to catch more fish in his free time.

Along the way, Ian learned about First Ascent and knew it would be the perfect fit to help him launch his remote career. In particular, he found the professional development opportunities – like his connection with mentor, Bill McKenna, Vice President of Strategic Growth at Trilogy Innovations – and networking socials offered by our program especially appealing.

Here’s what Ian had to say about his journey to becoming a First Ascent member and young professional in West Virginia:

Q: Do you have roots in West Virginia?

A: “I was not raised in West Virginia, though this state has played a big role in my life and upbringing. I was raised in Beaver County, Pennsylvania which is about an hour and a half from Morgantown. Both of my parents and one of my grandparents had graduated from WVU, so our family has always been WVU fans of all sports. Both of my brothers before me have also studied and earned degrees from West Virginia University, so I would visit the university quite often.”

Q: Why did you decide to apply to First Ascent?

A: “I was interested in First Ascent as I knew that this would be a great opportunity to remain in this beautiful state following graduation of my master’s degree program from WVU. In my interview, one question asked was, ‘do you have any concerns about staying in the state of West Virginia?’ To which I replied, I think this state gives me more reasons to stay, than reasons to leave.’ This state has provided me with so much over the years, and I only feel that it is right for me to give back in some way.”

Q: Why do you think it is important for recent college graduates to stay in the Mountain State?

A: “I believe it is important for recent college grads to stay in West Virginia for many reasons. However, the top of my list would be to attract more industry to the state, which will provide high-paying jobs and build up the infrastructure in some of the more rural areas of West Virginia, which I believe will entice more and more people to move to these areas of the state. The more opportunity we have for employment, the greater chance of college graduates sticking around.”

Q: What do you enjoy most about living in West Virginia?

A: I am an avid fisherman, for which West Virginia provides many lakes and streams to fish for trout, bass, etc. In addition to fishing, I enjoy taking walks on the nature trails provided throughout Morgantown and heading out to Cooper’s Rock for a nice hike. I enjoy camping in the Monongahela National Forest with friends, especially when they stock the streams with trout.

This state has so much to offer in terms of nature and beautiful scenery. I wish it were recognized and taken advantage of by more people.”
